Developmental regression, or the loss of previously acquired skills, is well-documented in the literature as one of the identifiable characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Besides developmental regression, various conditions and behaviors are also associated with AE, including those that constitute core symptoms used to diagnose autism.

Probably for that reason, scientists have hypothesized that, in cases where autism is accompanied by regression and atypical onset patterns, may be prudent to consider the potential AE as a more appropriate diagnosis.

However, children with ASD rarely undergo a detailed neurological examination and testing for various forms of encephalitis. Consequently, although the prevalence of ASD has seen a significant increase in recent decades, these disorders continue to be clinically diagnosed solely based on symptoms and neurodevelopmental history.

This book seeks to draw attention to that issue as AE is a treatable condition.
